Missed Call Text Back for Tree Services: Three Ways

September 22, 2026

Disclosure first, because this post names competitors and quotes their prices. We are one of the three options below. We sell a done for you setup to tree services, so treat the third section as what it is. The prices for the other two come from the vendors' own public pricing pages, read on 11 September 2026, and are linked so you can check them.

A missed call text back does one thing. When your phone rings and nobody picks up, a text goes to that number within seconds saying you will call back. The caller stops dialling the next company. That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth more to a tree service than to almost any other trade, because your crews are up a tree with a saw running for most of the working day.

Three ways to get it. They differ in cost, in who maintains it, and in how long it takes before it is answering calls.

Option one: build it on Twilio

Twilio is the plumbing almost everything else is built on. You buy a phone number, forward your business line to it, and write the logic that fires a text when a call goes unanswered.

The per message cost is genuinely small. Twilio's published US long code outbound rates are $0.0035 per message to AT&T, $0.0045 to T-Mobile and Verizon, $0.005 to US Cellular and $0.004 to all other carriers. At a hundred missed calls a month you are talking about pennies in message fees.

What the pennies do not cover is the rest. You need someone to write and host the code, a registered 10DLC brand and campaign before US carriers will deliver your messages reliably, and somebody on call when a text stops sending. Every one of those is a real job, and none of them is climbing.

This is the right option if you already have a developer, or if you are one. It is the wrong option if the plan is to learn it on winter evenings, because the failure mode is silent: messages stop going out and nothing tells you.

Option two: run it inside a CRM

Platforms like HighLevel bundle the text back with the rest of the stack, so the number, the automation, the inbox and the contact record are one system. HighLevel publishes Starter at $97 a month, Unlimited at $297 and Agency Pro at $497, with message costs billed separately on top.

The monthly fee buys you the software, not the setup. Somebody still has to register the 10DLC campaign, wire the workflow, write the message, connect it to the actual business line, and test that a missed call at 7pm on a Saturday produces a text. Owners who set this up themselves usually get there. It takes a few evenings and a couple of failed tests, and it is worth knowing that going in rather than after.

This is the right option if you want to own the account and are willing to spend those evenings once. It is also the option that scales into booking, reviews and follow up later, which a bare Twilio script does not.

Option three: buy it done

This is us, so read it with that in mind. Our $397 tree service pack includes the missed call text back configured and tested, along with the rest of the setup, and you own the account afterwards rather than renting access to ours. The argument for it is time rather than money: the software costs the same whoever clicks the buttons, and the evenings are the part a working owner does not have.

The argument against it is equally simple. If you enjoy this kind of work, option two gets you the same result for the platform fee and your own hours. We would rather say that here than have you find it out afterwards.

Which one, and what to check first

Before choosing, get the number that decides whether any of this is worth doing. Our missed call revenue calculator takes your call volume and average job value and returns what unanswered calls are costing your business specifically, rather than an average from somebody else's.

If that figure is small, none of the three is urgent. If it is large, the fastest of the three is the one to pick, because every week of deciding costs the same as the tool does.

One thing that applies to all three: a text back is an acknowledgement, not an answer. It buys you an hour, and the caller still needs a human or an answering setup built for tree services to actually book the job. We compared the answering options in AI receptionist for tree services, and the booking side in how to book tree service jobs automatically.

FAQ

Can I automatically text back a missed call? Yes. It is a standard automation, available through a messaging platform like Twilio, through a CRM that bundles it, or as a done for you setup. All three need a registered 10DLC brand and campaign before US carriers will deliver the messages reliably.

What does missed call text back cost for a tree service? The message fees are small. Twilio publishes US long code outbound rates of $0.0035 to $0.005 per message depending on carrier, read 11 September 2026. The cost that matters is the platform and the setup. HighLevel publishes Starter at $97 a month, Unlimited at $297 and Agency Pro at $497. Our own pack is $397 once, and includes the configuration.

Do I need 10DLC registration? For business messaging to US mobile numbers, yes. Unregistered traffic is filtered by the carriers, which produces the worst possible failure: the system looks like it is working and the customer never receives anything.

Will a text back annoy customers? A single reply to a call they made is expected behaviour, and it is how most service businesses now respond. What annoys people is unsolicited marketing texts to numbers that never called you. Those are a different thing and a legal risk.

Is it worth it if I only miss a few calls? Run your own numbers before deciding. A few missed calls a month on high value removal work can be worth more than a season of small jobs, and the calculator settles it in a minute.
